What is an NIE and do I need one to rent out my property?

Nothing administrative in Spain moves without it, and its purpose is often misunderstood.

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the identification and tax number for foreigners in Spain. It is required for tax filings, purchase deeds, utility contracts and most dealings with the administration, and it accompanies a Modelo 210 filing.

It is obtained through the police or a Spanish consulate, and the route differs by country.

An NIE is not a declaration of residence and says nothing about your tax residency. Those are two separate things.
